Raw Gold After Transformation

The gold then goes to the production stage. The granules of the precious metal are weighed according to the size of gold ingot, which can vary from 1oz up to 1000g. They are melted in a crucible and cast into a shape suitable for further processing. Then the ingots cool down and their weight is verified. The next step is the ingots punching with a hydraulic press. The molded ingots are finally packed in a special protective film and delivered to the banks and precious metal traders.

Gold Market

Gold can be purchased and physically held in ingots, bars and coins. A part of that is available to different financial markets. Since 1919, gold listing has been used worldwide as a reference by five banks in London: Barclays, HSBC, Deutsche Bank, Société Générale and Scotia Bank. In March 2015, the physical gold listing, also known as fixing, was modernized.

The 96-year old price fixing mechanism has been replaced by a more transparent electronic auction mechanism. The fixing is now governed by the stock exchange operator ICE. Purchase and sale offers are updated in real time and the gold price is updated every 30 seconds. The gold is also ranked in the form of forward or future contracts on LME (London Metal Exchange).

Rough diamonds

Types of diamonds. Once sorted, the diamonds are separated according to their gem quality, that means that they can be cut and sold for jewellery purposes or, otherwise, they are intended for industrial use. It is important to say that 80% of diamonds are of industrial quality. The main criteria for sorting are: diamond size, color, perfection and quality of cut. The most common forms are cube, octahedron, dodecahedron, rhombododecahedron and trioctahedron if you’ve forgotten your geometry classes.

“Fancy colors” stones are very popular with buyers. These rare specimens come in every color of the spectrum, including, most importantly, blue, green, pink, yellow and red. Moreover, the natural color of the diamond is often between bluish white and yellowish according to the diamond color grades range from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown).

CUTTING

A very delicate operation for the diamond before being sold, it is its cutting according to its natural shape. Here are five steps of this process:

  1. The cleavage consists of splitting the stone in two parts with a steel blade. It is amazing that we can split this “hardest” stone, but there is a technique that makes it possible if you know some weak points.
  2. Sawing allows the diamond to be shaped to obtain the best size for sale.
  3. The shape of the final outline of each gem before cutting the facets is created next in a process called bruting or girdling.
  4. Blocking is the following step for making a diamond that requires the most dexterity and experience for facets creation. The standard is 58 facets cut according to a mathematical arrangement of angles to produce excellent finish.
  5. Brilliance is the last touch that consists of polishing of each facet of the diamond.
